Crumpets

I made my crumpets on the weekend, followed the recipe to a tee and after all that process I'm not sure. They were good, particularly when toasted with jam or honey, but even though the mixture looked light and fluffy they were still a bit stodgy. I've not ever eaten home made ones before so I can't tell if they were as they should be. As always it was an interesting process, I'm just not sure I would make them again.

ps why does packaging from other countries always look so much nicer than ours? : )

yummy!
Do you know what made me smile? The flour comes from a small city near Cuneo and Turin where I always come across when going to Turin for my studies.
And you live in Australia, wow!

I'm Italian and most of the Italian packaging seems just normal and boring packaging to me :)
but I'm glad you're using Italian flour :)
if crumpets are so tricky I don't think I'm gonna try to bake them any soon!

They look beautiful Catherine. I love home made crumpets. They make them at Tricycle if you want to compare homemade ones.

I am glad you made them - I wanted to see how they would turn out. Are they a little bubbly on top like commercial ones? I always think European packaging is nicer than ours, seems more old-fashioned. Everyone in Oz seems to rebrand every year.

Respect to you for making them! They look yummy. I know what you mean about the packaging. They seem more simple and quaint than our over marketed ones. It seems that we have so many warnings and associations and ticks of approval across many too. Going into a gourmet shop of imported delights is just as beautiful for the labels and designs as for the food we'll eventually eat!

i've eaten some fantastic homemade crumpets at a place called Birdman Eating on Gertrude Street in Melbourne, and they're much heavier than the supermarket-bought crumpets... somehow the homemade one's feel more truthful!
